Tradition
Only boys were allowed to go overseas and study(pg 17)
Boys were supposed to inherit the family fortune(pg 37)
Men were allowed to have mistress(pg 41)
Women's role was just to be a good cook and hostess(pg 17)
Practices sexism towards woman(pg 17)
Woman were also not allowed to marry man from other races. They were supposed to marry babas.(pg 47)

Emerald hill was once a house full of live and parties were held regularly but everyone left and it became a lonely place with only emily living in it
Emily turned from a controlling and domineering mother into a understanding women. She has learnt to let Doris and Charles go when she was older. (pg 46, 47)
